Max on... being an "only" pet

I'm an "only" pet. No brother kitties... no sister kitties ... no puppies, turtles or birds... just good ol' HH and me.

Before HH took me to her house to be my forever home, I did live a short while with a lady who had a couple of dogs, a couple of birds and maybe another cat and me. That was so long ago, I barely remember the particulars, but HH tells me that they convinced her to take me because I didn't like the competition much because the dogs kept eating my food.... Can you imagine that?

So, anyway... I've been an "only" pet for as long as I can remember and at times that status has led me to believe that I wasn't a cat at all. For a while, I went through a period of acting like a puppy. For example, when someone would ring the doorbell, I'd gallop to the door to greet them. And, if invited in, I'd welcome them thoroughly by sitting right in front of them and listening to every word they said.

As a cat I know that this is aberrant behavior, but HH thought it was cute. So, an advantage of being an "only" pet is that you can be whatever you want to be (except naughty) without ridicule from others.

So, my question: What are you... an "only" pet or a pet from a "multi-pet" household?

And, what's the biggest advantage of your situation and what's the biggest drawback

We're multi-pet, three cats. But Annie would prefer to be the only cat--only non-human, in fact. :-)

The boys are well-socialized with other cats, though, and really need each other to wrassle with and chase. If something happened to Derry, I'd have to adopt again for Nicki's sake, couldn't leave him alone with Annie, since they don't get along with each other. Annie tolerates Derry better, so they could get on, just the two of them, if something happened to Nicki.

In our house, the biggest drawback is just as we've stated: Nicki and Annie don't get along, so there's always hissing and growling on her part and bullying on his.

But when all three of us join our human on her bed, and snuggle up in our spots, it brings her immense joy and comfort. That's the plus!

You are so lucky. I wish I were an only pet now. I loved Lady Harley and miss her but I wish mum and dad never got Fiona. She eats my food, sleeps in my best kipping places, chases me, nips my tail and now I have sister who tries to peel off my spots and take my Bowler. I wish I were you!

Like you, I'm an "only" cat. My peeps adopted another cat along with me but it didn't work out. I run to the door when it rings b/c there's usually take-out food on the other end. I think the woman is a cat and I treat her as such—jumping at her and biting her playfully (even though she doesn't think it's playful at all). I get lonely when the peeps are out or busy but am glad that there's no other animal to eat my food.

I live with two udder dogs and three kittehs. The kittehs is separate coz my sis Sydney would put the bitey on them. The kittehs is feral and anti-soshul so they prefer to be by theyselves anyway. If'n there was only one kitteh alone, that would be miserable coz they snuggle and all they has is each udder. I think I would be OK by myself coz I sometimes travel with my mom when my sisses stay home but mom has noticed I is much more animated and happier when one or both of my sisses comes along. So I gess you could say I really lub hasing sisses if'n the truth be told, and I do prefur to has them around.

I was an only cat for about 4 weeks after my brother died. Didn't like it and now I have 4 sisters and I like it lots!

When Mom first got me, there was another kitty, Sheena. Sheena was lonely cause her sisfur died, so Mom got me so Sheena would have a sisfur again. We didn't know it, but Sheena was sick. She died before I even got to know her really and since then I been an only kitty. My brofur went to a different forever home with lots of other animals. I think I got the better deal - I got Mom all to myself and don't have to share my toys or treats. And bestest is I get all the cuddles.

Like you Max, I am an only kitty. I think I would like a bro or sis to play with, but it's pretty nice not having to share my peeps with anyone!! M has to play with me and sometimes i treat her like another kitty. She laughs.

Well we are far from being an only cat. There are several of us here that would love to be an only cat. One of us stays away for days at a time. But most of us enjoy having company and the young ones here really enjoy playing with each other. But we bet you like being the only cat.

There are 12 of us here.
Pros: always somecat around to play with or snuggle. Some of us have best buddies to hang with.
Cons: Sharing--Mommy, treats, beds. Some of us don't get along and we squabble.
It works out pretty well though. It's sure better than living in the nasty Outside.

The best part of having sisters is having someone to teach you things/play with all the time and the worst part is competing for Mom's attention at the same time...We are pretty happy with our siblings around though=never a dull moment, that's for sure!...We love your photo=you are a gorgeous boy Max...kisses sweetie...xo...Calle, Halle, Sukki

There are 3 of us, and we don't mind sharing our Mummy and Daddy, especially because our Mummy stays at home! The only problem is that we all want to sleep on our parents' bed and don't like to share that!

Inigo was an only cat for two years, and I hear he was very sad and lonely during the day (you could hear him mewing all the way down the hall) and he wanted lots of attention when mum and dad were around. So they got MEEEE and now he's happy! (except when I'm eating his food. or stealing his cuddle time)
