Max's Mystery Novel - Episode 8

When we last left Max's Mystery Novel (my mystery novel), I had just run into the cat carrier by mistake. Fred had been murdered in Writer's Creative Studio (HH's business), and they had hauled poor Fred off.

I was trying to get the attention of Sheriff Johnson. I had important information to impart about Fred's murder, but with only the one word ("meow") in my human vocabulary, nobody was listening to me.

So, they took me to Ben and Phyllis' house and put me in the laundry room.

Imagine the indignity of it all --
EGAD!!!...putting me in one little room as if I would not know to use the litter when needed.... Well I was fit to be tied.

But, I'm not one to hold a grudge. After HH, Ben and Phyllis returned from talking to Sheriff Johnson, they did let me out of that room. I had settled down a bit by then, and I quietly followed HH into the living room where she sat and talked with Ben and Phyll while I napped on her lap.

(Hey-what's a guy to do.... I knew I had to wait until we returned to Writer's Creative Studio before I could take any action... I did overhear Ben say that we could return to the apartment the next day after the sheriff was finished. So why sweat it. I'd have my chance.)

The following afternoon, HH finally brought the cat carrier into the kitchen and for once I didn't resist getting into it -- I knew we were going home.

When we walked in the back door to the apartment, luck was with me -- someone had left the door open to the downstairs. I looked over my shoulder to make sure HH was watching me and I dashed down the stairs as quick as I could.

"Max.... no, no no! Come here pal. We're not supposed to be down there, yet. ...." I heard from behind me, then I heard HH's footsteps as she followed me down the stairs.

When she was within a couple yards of me. I jumped on her desk and put my right front paw up on Fred's folder.

You see, it was askew on her desk, and, being the observant sleuth that I am, I remembered that the folder had been straight on the pile of work before the murder. Keen eye for clues, right? Yep... I knew I was right in concluding that the murderer had been after something in that folder. Now, it was up to me to lead HH to that clue and that same conclusion.

HH approached and picked me up without looking at the pile of files under me.

I resisted and she lost her grip. Quickly, I dropped to the floor and jumped up on the far end of the desk and skidded to a stop with my rear foot held in just the right position to flip open Fred's folder. Ta-Da!!

HH headed for me again, then looked at the open folder. "Max," she said, "Fred's pictures are missing! Is that what you were trying to tell me?"

If I could have grinned at her, I would have. As it was, I was exhausted from the whole experience. She had her clue. My work... for the moment... was done... ...........until... (well, I'll save that for next time...)
