Max's Mystery Novel - Episode 10

If you are new to following Max's Mystery Novel... you'll find Episodes 1 thru 9 by clicking on the picture in the right column like the little one to the left here. All the episodes except this one are there.

So... when we left Max, we had just discovered that Stephanie (HH's new photographer and design person at Writer's Creative Studio) had been kidnapped. HH and Max headed over to Stephanie's apartment to help Sheriff Johnson sort through the "crime scene." HH wisely decided to take Max along this time. ... now in Max's own words...

When we arrived at Stephanie's apartment building, I was anxious to get out of the car and start searching for clues. It was bad enough that Fred had been murdered.... I was just praying that no harm had come to Stephanie, too.

When HH opened the car door, I lunged to get some traction on the ground and begin my investigation. It was not to be. HH caught me mid-air. "Not so fast, big boy," HH said. "I'll carry you in, just in case Sheriff Johnson doesn't want you snooping around."

My dignity was a bit dented, but I complied to her wish. It just would have been a bit more dignified if I could swagger in there and begin my investigation. Oh well....

When we entered the apartment, Sheriff Johnson greeted HH with the statement, "What's with the cat?"

HH held me up a little higher. "Max is your only witness to the murder. I thought he might help here."

"Hey, I've never partnered with a cat before, but if you think he can help, let him down. I'm never opposed to assistance from anyone or anything."

Anything? I thought that was a bit rude but didn't voice my discontent at his choice of words. I was too intent on surveying the room.

As soon as my feet hit the floor, I put my nose in investigative mode and began to slowly roam the room. It'd looked as if Stephanie had struggled a bit. Two chairs in the dining room were turned over and there were books on the floor as if Stephanie had tried to grab onto the bookcase on her way out.

I was about halfway around the room when I noticed a file folder sticking out from between the bookcases as if someone had shoved it there in a hurry. A person wouldn't have noticed it, but I was closer to the ground -- it was eye level for me. Just as I began to make a ruckus over my discovery, the phone rang....

Sheriff Johnson picked it up on the third ring and we turned to listen to his side of the conversation. He spoke for a minute, then turned to HH. "That was the kidnappers. They say Stephanie is okay. They'll call back in an hour... They want to talk with you..."

"Me....?" HH said.

"Yes, something about wanting the rest of the pictures."

That was my cue. I started pulling at the file folder in earnest and meowed simultaneously. I looked over at HH as if to say, "A little help here, please!" She didn't hear me articulate those very words. Instead it came out, "Meooooooooooooower!" but she understood.

"What ya got there, Max?" HH said. She knelt to pull the folder the rest of the way out of its hiding place. "Oh, good boy. This is it! This is what they're looking for....."
