Anipal Classic Book Club - Pride and Prejudice (post 1)

For post #1, I'm wondering if this is a guy's book or a chic's book... I mean, it's all about the girls and which men they fancy. As a guy's guy, I'm finding some of that a bit sissy for me, but I am finding some guidance from good ol' Mr. Bennet.

At first look, Mr. Bennet seems to be totally under the thumb of Mrs. Bennet. Oh...oh..., I thought. But on closer look, he's having his own good time in his quiet way. Yep, he happily survives the onslaught of all the "shoulds" of the women, who do their best to push him into doing what they want at any given moment.

Mr. Bennet has it all figured out. He knows that to survive in his world, he needs to do what Mrs. Bennet wants. But, he does so on his own terms and with a bit of puckish willfulness. I like that!.

I loved it when early on Mrs. Bennet was stewing over wanting him to pay a visit to Mr. Bingley... when, in reality, Mr. Bennet had (Hee Hee) already done so.

Good ol' Mr. Bennet seems to take silent delight in leading Mrs. Bennet to believe he just wasn't interested in making the visit. What a tease he is. But more than a tease, I think he delights in doing things his way. As a guy... I say, "More power to ya, Mr. Bennet."

Now I must address a shortcoming of this book... Where are the animals? Did these people have no pets? Okay, Ms. Jane Austen, just answer me that... don't you like the occasional handsome feline or canine for your book? We're watching you... hopefully you'll come through later in the book. That's it for now....

Bugsy and Knuckles update... The boys are settling in nicely... Thanks to all of you for your wonderful comments of welcome to them... As their uncle, I'm doing my best to guide them in the right direction... More on that in subsequent posts.

It may be a chick book, but thanx goodness for Mr. Bennet. He keeps all us guys laughing (inside) with his way of handling being in a house over-run with girls! Personally, living with Mrs. Bennet would drive me nuts!

It's a shame the only anipals so far are horses. Maybe there is still hope to find a cat or dog.

Hope you will continue to read and enjoy!

Beth here....I didn't know if I would enjoy this book but as it goes along I am. I can't imagine living in such a world of little to do other than socialize....and being SO polite. Times they have changed.... Mr. Bennet is my favorite but Jane is the perfect example of kindness. Always seeing the best in everyone. Mr. Darcy I am certain will turn out to be more than the impolite person so far portrayed. I look forward to reading the rest of the book....

AGREED!

Mr. Bennett keeps it real for all us males out here! Too much talk of trimmin' hats, petticoats, socializin' and dancin'. BLECH!

But Mr. Bennett has learned to survive in a house full of da' ladies. But we does have to say, wosn't we MAD at him when he made Jane go out on horseback and she caught cold (Chapter 7). And then: makin' Lizzy walk 3miles in the mud :-p That wos a bit harsh.

Us boys have never read it, but she tells us that she thinks Mr. Bennet is one cool dude!!!!!!!

Love to all of you.

Yeah, we noticed no animals, also! Maybe people didn't have pets back in those days? It seems like EVERYONE loves Mr. Bennet! He's a funny guy!

It may be a chick book, but you boys could make notes and learn a lot! I think some of the male characters might become more important later on (Shhh!)

Some excellent points about Pride and Prejudice. Yes, where are all the animals? Perhaps cats were only kept for mousing?
